How does the bore size/cup depth of a mouthpiece effect playing?
I play trumpet in my high school marching band and in the jazz band, and I play French horn in the wind symphony. I have a size 7C trumpet mouthpiece, and I recently bought a size 3C from the same manufacturer. The 3C feels much easier to play with, especially on the higher notes. I also recently bought a Schilke 27 French horn mouthpiece. This doesn't feel much different than my old one, but the sound quality is much better. How does mouthpiece bore size/cup depth effect ability to play/range/tone quality/intonation? Is playing with a gold plated mouthpiece different than silver if they're both the same size and brand?

I don't play Trumpet but I have experimented with Horn mouthpieces and found that depth and bore and diameter affect the quality in various ways as described in the articles above. When I shortened the cup depth I lost tone but certain aspects were easier. When I opened the bore I got more tone, but playing high required more work. When I decreased the ID intervals popped but again I lost tone.
Ultimately Ive ended up playing on a Laskey 80F which I like a great deal, but Im still experimenting. Choosing the correct mouthpiece is a compromise in finding the right balance to fit your needs
