Acoustic Guitar Set
Acoustic guitar set-up/maintenance question!?
I bought my acoustic guitar about a year ago and I'm going to have my "complementary set-up" tomorrow. I do have some questions though.
A) How do you know when you need a set-up?
B) What are some things I should mention to the guitar tech before he sets up my guitar (ie. playing style? preferences?)?
C) Currently, when I tune half-step down to play along with some tunes, I experience some fret buzz. Should I tell the guitar tech to "set it up" for half-step down? What will he do to my guitar to fix this? Are there any cons when I want to go back to standard tuning?
a. a set up is always a good idea on a new guitar, or one that hasn't been played in awhile its always good to have and will help make it more comfortable for you to play
b. if you're always going to be tuning down a half step, or even lower, it'd be helpful for them to know
c. the fret buzz is almost certainly from either the gauge of strings you use, or the action on the neck.
let the tech know about what you like to do with your guitar, and ask him questions about what gauge strings you should use. there really is a difference, and you'll eventually find what you're comfortable with, but If you're going to be drop tuning and playing lets say.. metal constantly, you'll need something a little different than somebody who keeps it in standard and plays traditional G D A E songs, ya know ? 
There's not necessarily a setup for a half step down, but ask them every question on your mind. Guitar techies like to talk techie stuff and won't think you're a weirdo if you don't know things they do! i promise!
