What is the difference between the different guitar pickup wiring styles?
What is the difference between phased our out of phase, parallel, in series, coil tapping, etc. I have a set of seymour duncan sh-6 neck and bridge for my les paul and I dont know what would be the best setup. I have installed pickups before but only in strats so this is my first les paul project. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
I'll try to make this brief, but if it gets a little long I apologize...
Out of phase- using both pickups, the polarity is reversed on one of them so that the sound is kind of thin. Similar to wiring a pickup in parallel.
Coil tapping is when you turn one coil of the pickup off, essentially making it a single coil. Neither phase nor tap is a possibility on a Les Paul unless you add another switch.
Series vs. parallel is the relationship between each coil of the pickup. Normally, they are wired so that they are in series- the output of one coil going into the input of the other. Wiring them in parallel makes it sound simiilar to a single coil (cuts the output in half) but it still remains humbucking.
Remember that the pickups only job is to detect the vibrations from the strings and shouldn't be considered as something to boost volume. As pickups become stronger, they tend to get muddier and lose their high end unless the pickup is very carefully designed.
