For almost all amateur horologists it’s not enough just building and dismantling watches. You have to get the best equipment to help you through in your hobby. Just as you cannot use a sword to paint, the same way any table surface will not do to start working on. Most amateur horologists do start their hobby just this way. They spread out a table cloth on the kitchen table and get to work. When their work is done, they just push together the material and pack it off for another day. But if you want to be a professional watch repairers and a watchmaker, then you have to think about getting a good watch makers bench. It is expensive no doubt about that but if you are serious about your work and your hobby; then it’s a worth while investment.
And I’m not just saying this; watchmaker’s benches are really beautiful. They look like tiny medicine chests with a lot of well-made shallow drawers built into the model to help you out. The drawers are not like conventional drawers which have a lot of depth to them. These are grooved with extremely shallow depths so that you can easily locate the part you are searching for. Most of the benches come in light colored woods, which make it much easier to see the spare parts in the drawers. Each desk can have a lot of additional tweaks built into it like transparent parts containers, work sections, storage compartments and even a strong table lamp to make working much easier. Along with the bench you can order Bench mats with adhesive backs are available which protect the work surface and prevent any spillages on it. The bench mat also prevents any slippery bits from rolling off and under the table. One specialty of the watchmaker’s bench is that the entire table top has a rolled and raised border to prevent bits and pieces from falling off. Each manufacturer has built in features like you can add a bench vise to the table to make working that much easier.
The design of watchmaker benches is such that the tabletop surface is close to your face and the watchmaker does not have to bend down over the table. This reduces the stress on your back when you peek in the inner workings of watches. Each table will also have a slide-out stand that will catch any parts like springs and screws that bounce out from the watch you have chosen. Remember that the positioning of your table is as important as the table itself. Find areas that are free from carpets and draperies. The sliding top will catch any small part which rolls out but it might not be able to catch all. You don’t want the pieces to get lost in carpeting and drapery! Keep the table in a well lit and aired corner of your work room and when you are not working cover it with a piece of white cloth. This ensures that you are caring for your workplace well.
