Jazz Band help!!! How can you improve keeping time and in sync with other saxes?
Ok... so my jazz band splits up into sections (altos in one group, tenors and bari + the one and only trombone in our band, trumpets and the rythme section). I play tenor and I'm with the other tenor, bari and tbone and we're having trouble keeping in sync. What can we do to sound as one complete section? (well, the trombone guy can do w/e he does, but the other 3 of us need work to be in sync). Should we bring a loud metronome? or is there other ways to improve our way to practice?
At first practicing with a metronome is a good choice for each of you individually, but in "game conditions" with the band playing you'll rarely hear all four beats of a rhythm plainly stated by the drummer unless it's done after the manner of a classic swing band (the so-called "four on the floor" approach with the bass drum). I have two suggestions: practice very slowly at first to build rhythmic precision that will be most useful as you move closer to the actual tempo and once you have it, then change the metronome to half tempo and consider it as keeping two and four of each bar not unlike a drummer's hi-hat figure. For faster tempos (swung or Latin) keep track of the time in cut time (2/2) so you don't wear out your brain or foot trying to keep track of that fast quarter note. When I play in reading jazz ensembles the only time I ever count in four is on ballads (slow tempos); otherwise, my brain has an advantage slowing down the flow of time via cut-time skills. If this doesn't seem practical, go back to your first book if you still have it and try playing "Jingle Bells" in a fast four, then try the same tune in cut-time at half the speed the quarter note flowed at in 4/4; not only will it be easier to play, but it will also feel more natural to the listener as well.
