Cymbal Mallets All

Cymbal Mallets All

Solo and Ensemble percussionist?

what would be good? i am in 8th grade and we have 5 percussionists. can you do a timpani and mallets ensemble? could all 5 of us do like 3 snares, cymbals and a base drum? can percs. do things w/ other instruments?

Thanks <33

Aha!

Well...

If you do a perc ensemble, make sure to have mallets. One or even two people on mallets is ideal for a group of 5. Past that, do what you like.

Speaking as a wind player now, we love to have percussionists around. If there's any groups of wind instruments around, ask them if they need percussionists. Trust me, 9 times out of 10, a brass ensemble (I've been doing that for about 7 years) is going to be ready to do anything short of pay you to play with them.

Back to just perc ensemble stuff- if you have a chance to look at any perc ensemble music you think you want to play, look at the instrumentation and figure it out from there. Anyway, though you all may specialize, it is a VERY good idea to diversify- don't all play the same instrument all the time. Swap around, and the different experience you get performing and rehearsing on different parts will help you massively in the long run.

Hope I gave you the answer you were looking for. If you've got any other questions, feel free to email me- I know a few pro percussionists who are happy to answer questions.
