Effects of cold weather on a set of drums?
I have a set of Pearl drums that is needing to go into storage since we are putting our house on the market. My storage unit is NOT temp controlled and I live in Illinois (which means it is cold this time of year). What will the effects be on my drums? I know it isn't supposed to be good for any instrument to sit in extreme temps...I just want to know what to expect. Thanks
Ok i know theres already 8 answers, but i didnt like any of them. so ill give you my advice haha
naturally, when a material gets cold, it contracts, except for water which expands. now the wood should already be fairly dry, but there will be some expanding and contracting of the shells which can throw the drum out of tune. not a huge deal, just loosen the heads before storage so there isnt a lot of stress on the drum.
to answer your question more specifically, there shouldnt be a whole lot of harmful effects from keeping it in the cold. most often when you hear about weather damaged gear, its more for delicate instruments, or extreme temperature fluctuations (hot to cold to hot to cold to repeat). a steady, cold temp shouldnt bother it too much.
